What is Hypnosis?

Is it a trance; is it a dance with your inner self?

Is it a state, where you communicate, with your inner wisdom?

My mentor, Shelley Stockwell-Nicholas, PhD, defines hypnosis as:

“. . . a Natural State of heightened awareness where you easily accept suggestions, listen to inner wisdom, replace limiting imprints and get high with your higher self.”

I like to think of hypnosis as “learning to communicate directly and effectively with your Inner Self so that you can connect to your inner wisdom where all programming is done.”

Hypnosis treats the problem, not the symptom.

What can Hypnosis do for ME?

Hypnosis will change your life in many areas, such as:

  • Enhance Performance at work, school, on stage, in sports
  • Eliminate undesirable habits
  • Enrich Relationships
  • Improve Your Health

What is the definition of Hypnosis?

There are many definitions of hypnosis and all of them describe the associated phenomena.   A person “under hypnosis” may exhibit physiological changes, such as:

  • Deep, rhythmic breathing
  • Deep sigh or yawn
  • Muscle relaxation
  • Change in body temperature
  • Change in skin coloration
  • Rapid Eye movement

If we were to measure the brain wave activity while “under hypnosis”, your brain waves would probably measure in the Alpha, 7-13 Hz range, or Theta, 4-7 Hz range.  You naturally enter a heightened state of awareness in this frequency range of brain wave activity.  Brain research acknowledges that the Alpha range is optimum for learning and the Theta range assists with profound transformation.

People that are in the hypnotic, or trance state often experience:

  • Deep relaxation
  • Tingling in the hands or legs
  • Feeling of inner bliss
  • Mellowness, feeling of well-being
  • Pictures, sound and light
  • New perceptions and insights
  • Connection with the Universe

So, even though we can only explain hypnosis via the experience, what is it?  Even though we don’t know how it works, we do know that it works!  Hypnosis is a process that effects a result.  The only way to know if the hypnotic session is effective is by objectively evaluating the success of the session.  So, if you want to quit smoking, and, after your hypnotherapy sessions, you do, then, success – you were hypnotized!

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Do you become so thoroughly engrossed in a TV program or sports event to the point where you ignore all else around you?  When driving on a long road trip, do the white lines on the road lull you into autopilot mode?  Do you daydream at work about where you will take your next holiday?  When listening to your favorite music, do you naturally “space out?”  Have you fantasized about your ideal mate?  Do you meditate?  Do you pray?

If you answered “Yes” to any of the above, then you have already experienced hypnosis. Hypnosis is a perfectly natural state.  When you turn your attention away from the outer world and focus on your inner world, you enter the realm of thought.   This hypnotic, or trance state of mind, connects you with your inner wisdom.

All hypnosis is really self-hypnosis. Contrary to the Hollywood interpretation of a Svengali style hypnotic trance, you cannot be made to do anything against your will.  You will know everything that is going on around you.  Stage hypnotists carefully screen their audience for suggestible subjects that are ready to release their inner, playful, child.  The stage hypnotist is trained to recognize people that really want to quack like a duck in public and need a good excuse to do so!

A hypnotherapist acts as a guide on your inner journey, holding the mirror so you can experience your inner wisdom.  A hypnotherapist teaches you how best to change your programming by giving you well-phrased suggestions and tools for transformation.  In order to optimize this process, the hypnotherapist induces the hypnotic state – a trance – so that you are receptive to exchange limiting imprints for more resourceful ones.
